Your guide to becoming an Australian citizen—clear, concise, and supported every step of the way.
Why Australian Citizenship?
For many migrants, obtaining Australian Permanent Residency (PR) is a major milestone—but it’s not the final destination. Becoming an Australian citizen offers a range of powerful benefits: full voting rights, access to diplomatic services, unrestricted travel, and most importantly—a lifelong sense of belonging.
If you currently hold PR—whether through the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), State Nominated (Sc 190), Employer Sponsored (Sc 186), or National Innovation Visa / Global Talent Visa (Sc 858)—you may be eligible to apply for citizenship. Here’s what you need to know.
Who Is Eligible for Australian Citizenship?
To be eligible for citizenship by conferral (the most common pathway), you must generally meet the following criteria:
General Eligibility:
- Hold a permanent visa (such as 189, 190, 186, 858)
- Have lived in Australia for 4 years, with at least 12 months as a PR. No more than 12 months spent outside Australia in the last 4 years and no more than 90 days spent outside Australia in the 12 months prior to applying.
- Be of good character
- Pass the Australian Citizenship Test (unless exempt)
- Demonstrate basic English proficiency
- Intend to live in Australia or maintain a close association with the country

2. Prepare Required Documents
Typically includes:
- Passport
- PR visa grant letter
- Birth certificate
- Other proof of identity
- Proof of residence (utility bills, rental agreements, etc.)
- Police checks
3. Lodge Your Application
Submit your application online via immi.account. You’ll also pay the citizenship application fee (approximately AUD 560).
4. Attend the Citizenship Interview and Test
Applicants between 18 and 59 will need to:
- Prove English skills
- Take the citizenship test—a 20-question multiple-choice exam (pass mark: 75%)
5. Wait for Decision
Processing times vary, but most applications are decided within 7–10 months.
6. Attend a Citizenship Ceremony
This is the final step! Once approved, you’ll be invited to attend a formal ceremony and make the Pledge of Commitment—an emotional and proud moment for many.
What Are the Benefits of Becoming an Australian Citizen?
Australian citizens enjoy privileges not available to PR holders:
