State-Specific Updates: 2024-25 Skilled Visa Allocations

Overview

Skilled Visa is a type of visa that allows highly skilled workers to live and work in Australia. It is designed to attract individuals with specific skills needed in the Australian economy, addressing skill shortages and contributing to the country’s economic growth. Skilled visas are typically awarded based on factors like work experience, qualifications, and language proficiency.

For the 2024-25 program year, the Australian Government has allocated a substantial number of skilled visa nomination places across various states and territories to meet the growing demand for skilled workers. The 2024-25 nomination allocations for various Australian states and territories have been announced, bringing significant changes and opportunities for skilled migrants. Here’s a detailed overview of the updates across the states and territories:

Northern Territory

The Australian Government has doubled the number of nomination places for the Northern Territory (NT) in the 2024-25 program year, allocating a total of 1,600 places. This substantial increase from the previous year reflects the NT’s growing demand for skilled migrants. Applications for nomination can now be submitted through the NT Government’s online portal. For further information and updates, members are encouraged to review the NT Government website.

South Australia

South Australia has received 3,800 skilled visa nomination places for the 2024-25 program year, an increase of 1,500 places from the previous year. The allocation is divided into:

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190): 3,000 places
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491): 800 places

Detailed information about South Australia’s skilled migration program will be announced soon.

Western Australia

Western Australia has been allocated 5,000 skilled visa nomination places for the 2024-25 program year. The state nomination program is now open, and invitation rounds are expected to occur in the first week of each month starting August 2024. Notably, the Western Australian government continues to waive the $200 application fee and has introduced additional employment contract arrangements for candidates invited through the General Stream – WASMOL – Schedule 1.

Queensland

Queensland has been allocated 1,200 skilled visa nomination places, split equally between the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

New South Wales

New South Wales (NSW) has received a significant allocation of 5,000 skilled visa nomination places for the 2024-25 program year, distributed as follows:

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190): 3,000 places
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491): 2,000 places

Invitation rounds for NSW will occur throughout the financial year without predetermined or publicly announced dates.

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491): 760 places

The Tasmanian Skilled Migration State Nomination Program will reopen for new Registrations of Interest shortly.

Fast Tracking and Prioritisation for Construction Skills Assessments

Minister for Skills and Training, Hon Brendan O’Connor MP, announced an initiative to fast-track skills assessments for migrants with building and construction experience. Over the next two years, Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) will prioritise the assessment of around 2,600 skills assessments and streamline the process for specified occupation/country combinations.
